A childs teething process is divided into 3 stages. The baby teeth stage, the mixed dentition stage and the permanent teeth stage.

The baby teeth period; teeth should start to appear around the 5 – 6 month mark and the patient should have about 20 baby teeth around the ages of 2 – 3. Healthy baby teeth should aid in talking and chewing. İf tooth decay does surface then these teeth must be treated, when not treated these problems can pass on and severely affect the permanent teeth. When a tooth is lost and not treated there must be enough room for the tooth to pass through without affecting neighbouring teeth. Fixed dental appliances like space maintainers are great for this reason and are essential in maintaining tooth structure.

By the age of 12 the child should have one by one replaced all baby teeth with their permanent teeth. Within the ages of 6 – 12 the child has both baby teeth and permanent teeth. During this period it is also necessary to regularly see a dentist in order to maintain good tooth structure and it is important to apply whatever othodontic treatment necessary.

Preventive orthodontic treatment is the prevention and protection of deformalities in the jaw, teeth and facial stucture from early on. Problems faced down the track like deformed mouth structure and bad lip and tongue functionality can be a big problem if not diagnosed from a young age. Genetic problems, thumb sucking, long term use of a pacifier or dummy and losing baby teeth early are all the early signs of orthodontic problems. İn order to avoid a long, tiring and expensive treatment in adulthood these problems must be treated within the ages of 7 – 8 for a short, easy and painless orthodontic treatment. When the incisors in children start to appear and congestion occurs, this will result in crookedness of teeth and or “buck teeth”. İf an incisor appears late then there is a high possibility of a jaw problem. Without the loss of time it is important that the child undergo immediate orthodontic treatment ( jaw expanders and functional dental appliances). The child must be treated between the ages of 8 – 10, at the latest 11.

İf treatment is not undergone between these ages while the child is growing then major abnormalities can and will be seen in adulthood, not to mention the orthodontic treatment will be alot more costly. İf it is a light problem then a basic orthodontic appliance will do but if not, the dentist will recommend full orthodontic treatment (braces).

These treatments, if the patient has not been checked up in time (before the age of 12) and treated usually take much longer and are alot more costly. İt can sometimes even end in the patients teeth being extracted. This is why it is extremely important to undergo orthodontic treatment at a very young age.
